Euro club £1m short of Rangers valuation for exit-linked star as transfer talks begin - report

Trabzonspor and Rangers have a £1million gap in their valuations of exit-linked star James Tavernier, according to TEAMtalk.

The outlet reported on its website on Friday (19 July) that initial discussions have taken place between the two teams, but the European club are still £1million short of matching the Light Blues current asking price.

Tavernier is understood to be keen on the move having already agreed personal terms with Trabzonspor, where he will be handed a large pay-rise and an initial two-year deal with the option of a year extension.

Reports had suggested the Gers had received an official proposal from the Turkish club for the 32-year-old but that offer was rejected [Fabrizio Romano, 19 July].

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Trabzonspor transfer developments?

Rangers need to sell players this summer so that they can continue adding to their squad ahead of the new season, but they will still want to receive the right sort of transfer fees for any players who do depart.

It will not benefit the Light Blues if they were to sell their captain for less than his valuation just to get him off of the books, as they will have basically taken an immediate financial hit for a short-term gain.

While his performances in the second half of the season showed that he may not have what it takes to play week in and week out for the Gers, he is still an important member of Philippe Clement’s squad who will need replacing.

Hopefully, Trabzonspor will be willing to meet Rangers’ valuation sooner rather than later as it will not help anybody if this transfer saga is to drag on up until the end of the summer window.

For the sake of £1million, you would imagine the Turkish giants would be willing to fork out the extra cash just to get the deal over the line.
