'Excites Me' - Pundit delighted by confirmed Rangers signing

Oscar Cortes is the type of exciting player that Rangers need says Derek Ferguson, who backs the club’s move to bring him back after injury on loan with the club last season.

The Light Blues confirmed (3 June) that the Colombian winger had signed a new one-year loan deal with an obligation to sign him for another four years next summer, after Rangers Review had reported (1 June) that Lens were insisting on a deal worth around £4million.

Ferguson is confident that the seven games the 20-year-old managed after his January arrival at Ibrox before injury showed he has the quality to be worth re-signing and is a big fan of the “brave” youngster’s style of play.

“I like everything about him,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

Do you want to know something? He was a brave lad as well, he’s not the biggest but he was brave in terms of he would put his head in where he was going to get hurt.

“I love the way he plays his football when he was playing in that wide left [position], taking players on, great delivery.

[He was] just unfortunate. It was dead innocuous that injury he got down at Kilmarnock, just stretching for a ball and obviously that ended his season.

“But there was enough to like in that short period of time in a blue jersey so the opportunity to take him on loan again, why not? Because, to me, I think there’s a player there, and sometimes players that come back from a long lay-off you sometimes see them come back fresh, hungry and they want to show their worth.

“It quite excites me to get him because we need that type. The fans want that type to excite you. Yep that will do for me.”

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has secured the return of the Rangers loanee Oscar Cortes.

Can Oscar Cortes rebound from Rangers injury?

Bringing back Cortes won’t ultimately be cheap but helps ensure the current squad doesn’t go backwards before Clement and Nils Koppen can bring it forward this summer.

A goal and two assists in all competitions for Rangers from his seven outings doesn’t jump out on paper but the youngster quickly looked a threat in this side and if he can pick up where he left up should be a significant asset.

Hopes that he can do so should be boosted by the fact that he was keen to remain in Glasgow and continue playing for the Belgian [Rangers Review, 3 June], so a relationship has clearly been built up.

He was originally brought in to replace injured fellow loanee Abdallah Sima and immediately looked to be doing so, so with the Brighton forward potentially not coming back the Colombian could now be tasked with that role longer-term.

In other Rangers news, another Gers signing is on the cards after a six-figure payment update emerged.
