Manchester City have a “huge” profit and sustainability (PSR) capacity if they want to sign a Rodri replacement in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Man City currently sit second in the Premier League table behind Liverpool after remaining unbeaten in their opening eight games of the campaign.
But star midfielder Rodri will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in the first half of last month’s draw against Arsenal.
Kevin De Bruyne has also been sidelined with a groin injury he picked up last month, while Oscar Bobb isn’t expected to return until the New Year after breaking his leg in pre-season training.
That has left Man City slightly short in recent weeks after they only made two new additions over the summer, with Savinho joining from Troyes and Ilkay Gundogan returning from Barcelona.
But sources have told Football Insider the Premier League champions have “hundreds of millions” of PSR capacity should they wish to strengthen their side in the January window.
Man City player-trading profits have strengthened transfer budget
Man City’s transfer budget has been strengthened significantly by their ability to offload players for substantial fees.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already banked more than £100million in player-trading profit for the third consecutive season following the permanent exits of Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Sergio Gomez and Tommy Doyle over the summer.
Their primary focus heading into January is expected to be around signing someone to fill in for Rodri until the end of the season.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Man City will try and bring in a new midfielder during the mid-season window, but he admitted it’s almost an “impossible” task to find a suitable replacement for the 28-year-old.
Football Insider revealed on 29 September Man City are considering making a move to sign Rodri’s Spain teammate Martin Zubimendi once the transfer window reopens.
The 25-year-old midfielder turned down a switch to Liverpool over the summer after deciding to remain with his boyhood club Real Sociedad.
In other news, Guardiola “used” England talks to land improved Man City deal.
