Exclusive: Newcastle United plot new bid for Everton player

Newcastle United remain interested in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and are plotting a new bid after previous talks collapsed, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Newcastle tested the waters for Calvert-Lewin on a cut-price deal before the 30 June financial deadline.

However, the deal stalled after they were unable to clear space in their squad.

Sources say Everton are desperate to tie the 27-year-old down to a new contract, but no progress has been made as talks remain ongoing.

Calvert-Lewin will now have a “huge” decision to make about his destination come the end of the summer transfer window.

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 for a fee of just £1.5million, and he has since gone on to make 247 appearances for the club.

In that time, he has scored 68 times, although he found the net just seven times in 32 league games last season in what proved to be an underwhelming year.

Clubs are also said to hold concerns surrounding his patchy injury record.

The striker’s current deal at Goodison Park is set to expire next summer, and Newcastle are keen to take advantage of his situation.

Should no deal be completed this summer, and talks between Everton and the striker’s representatives fail to bear fruit, Calvert-Lewin could move for free next year.

Eddie Howe’s side are looking to strengthen their attacking options behind Alexander Isak, with Callum Wilson’s future up in the air.

As revealed by Football Insider, Newcastle are attempting to sell Wilson this summer to free up space in their squad but have struggled to drum up interest in a move.

Howe is known to favour homegrown talent, while the arrival of Calvert-Lewin would also help the club to remain within the FA and UEFA registration rules.
