Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Nottingham Forest could pay £50million to expand the City Ground by 10,000 seats.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed it is “now down to Forest to keep themselves in the Premier League” to green-light the project.

As per the BBC (8 July), Nottingham City Council has agreed in principle to sell the land around the City Ground to Nottingham Forest after a rent dispute earlier this year.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis had threatened to move the club out of the city to a new 50,000-seater stadium but the new agreement is now set to allow Forest to expand capacity from 29,000 to 40,000 at their historic ground.

The Midlands club plan to rebuild the Peter Taylor Stand and extend the Bridgford Stand to facilitate the increase.

City Ground expansion could cost Nottingham Forest ‘£50m’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “A very rough estimate would be around £5,000 a seat.

“They’re looking at an expansion of around 10,000, so that would be £50million.

“That could be the sort of number we’re looking at, and it seems about right.

“I don’t know if there is any major structural work or groundwork that would have to come, so it could be higher.

“That will make the City Ground a more intimidating and more enjoyable arena.

“Hopefully some new facilities will come as part of that too, so everybody can win.

“It’s now down to Forest to keep themselves in the Premier League.

“As we know, it’s not always that easy.”
