Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Sir Jim Ratcliffe is “sailing close to the wind” with his dual ownership of Man United and Nice.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the decision to pick a fight with Uefa over a deal for Nice star Jean-Clair Todibo was all wrong.

Ratcliffe & INEOS made sufficient changes to their ownership of Nice to ensure both they and Man United can play in the Europa League next term.

As part of the Uefa investigation, the clubs committed to not signing (loan or permanent) players from each other from July 2024 to September 2025.

Todibo had been a target for Man United with Ratcliffe has hit out at the rules in an interview, claiming they are “not fair on the player and I don’t see what [they] achieve”.

It has even been reported that United hired Swiss lawyer Gianpaolo Monteneri to appeal Uefa’s decision.

Wyness claimed the saga is “another negative” for Ratcliffe in the early stages of his reign at Old Trafford.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Ratcliffe planned to challenge legally, but looking at the Uefa statutes – it was always a no-go.

“That’s now been confirmed to be the case.

“He’s sailing pretty close to the wind with Nice and Man United now.

“Certainly, sales between the two clubs was a no-go from the start. I don’t know why you’d pick a fight with Uefa over something pretty clear.

“There’ll be other battles with them coming up pretty soon.

“It’s another negative to the start for Ratcliffe at Old Trafford.”
