Wolves could be forced to sell one of their star players in the January transfer window to avoid a potential profit and sustainability (PSR) breach, sources have told Football Insider.
The West Midlands side were believed to be close to breaking the spending rules last season, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.
But they are expected to have avoided a PSR breach for 2023-24 following the big-money sales of Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves and Nathan Collins.
Wolves were also forced to part ways with former captain Max Kilman and Pedro Neto in the recent summer transfer window to ease their financial concerns, with those deals raking in close to £100million.
However, sources have told Football Insider Gary O’Neil’s side will face a “big problem” from a PSR perspective again this season if they are unable to climb the table and generate more prize money.
They currently sit third-bottom in the Premier League and could need to sell another key player in the upcoming January window to avoid breaching the spending rules.
Wolves must conclude transfer business in January after accounts reveal
A points deduction is the likely punishment for a PSR breach after Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points last season.
Some Premier League clubs made last-ditch sales before this year’s 30 June accounting deadline to avoid breaking the rules.
But sources have told Football Insider Wolves don’t have that luxury as their accounting deadline is 31 May, which is before the summer transfer window opens.
That means Molineux chiefs must have their business concluded by the end of January, opening them up to potential sales next month.
Ex-Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively revealed to Football Insider his former side have identified Matheus Cunha as a target to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s attacking options.
Wolves posted a revenue of £168.6million in their latest accounts for 2022-23, but they recorded a £67.2million loss and their wage bill increased to £141.5million across the same period.
In other news, Matheus Cunha’s response to Wolves contract offer revealed.
