Ibrox View: Exit-linked player now appears set to stay at Rangers, may cost them millions

James Tavernier now appears set to stay at Rangers after Philippe Clement has issued an update on his situation.

Ahead of the season opener against Hearts on 3 August, the Belgian spoke to the media where he claimed that the 32-year-old is showing daily he wants to play.

This is highly unlike the situation of Todd Cantwell with the manager going public about his desire to leave.

Clement said: “What is interesting for me is what players show in games, Tav is showing every day he wants to play.”

Clement’s comment suggests that Tavernier’s commitment and performance in games are key factors in determining his future at Ibrox.

The aforementioned phrase indicates that the 32-year-old is actively demonstrating his desire to remain with the club.

This level of commitment from the captain is likely to be valued by the management, making it less probable that they would accept offers for him.

The financial implications of not selling Tavernier would see the club potentially missing out on millions they could’ve generated from his sale.

There are Saudi clubs keen on the right-back and they have a propensity to overpay for targets, which would benefit Gers.

Clement’s message to the press does not indicate in any shape, way or form that the Englishman is closer to the exit door which is not ideal as this is the last window they can realistically get a decent transfer fee.
