Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey will provide an ideal short-term fix for the defensive issues Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window.
That is according to former Spurs scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected there and has a wealth of experience in player recruitment, as he exclusively told Football Insider that making the move on loan is a good move for all parties.
This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed that the club have made contact with the Serie A outfit about a potential six-month loan deal for the former Everton man.
Godfrey, 26, swapped Merseyside for Bergamo in the summer, but has since made just five appearances and is already thought to be keen on a return to England.
Tottenham’s interest comes as a result of a defensive injury crisis which has seen both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined, forcing 18-year-old Archie Gray to fill in at centre-back.
Godfrey’s ability to play in numerous roles across the back line has made him an ideal candidate and short-term fix for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Brown, meanwhile, explained that there is no point in the clubs spending “mega money” on a new permanent signing when Romero and Van de Ven will remain the first choice duo when they return.
Tottenham eye shock move to sign Ben Godfrey in January
Brown told Football Insider earlier this month that Tottenham had already begun work on the signing of a “top-class” centre-back in the January window.
Now, the former scout who has vast experience in player recruitment and development at the top level after spending over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted Godfrey’s availability has presented Spurs with an ideal opportunity.
“There’s definitely value in signing him on loan,” he told Football Insider.
“They’ll be considering how long Romero and Van de Ven are going to be out for, and if it’s a month or even two, they’ll want somebody to fill in for that time.
“When those two are back, they’re going to be the first choice, so there’s no point spending mega money on a new defender who you’re not going to use.
“I was told his agent has been putting his name about to talk up a move back to England.
“I wouldn’t have tipped him as a player to help Tottenham step forward, to be honest, he’s just not that type of player and there’s a reason Everton let him go.
“But they’ve got injuries in key positions and his availability makes the deal an easy one to do.
“He’s keen on it, his club are willing to let him go, and Tottenham are after a short-term fix without getting stuck with a player on a long contract who isn’t necessarily good enough.”
