Rangers could afford to hijack Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes as a replacement for Philippe Clement, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
The Gers boss has come under pressure after a miserable start to the Premiership season and Kilmarnock boss McInnes has been tipped to be in the frame if the Light Blues make a change in the dugout [Graham Dorrans, 23 October].
Although Rangers are understood to be standing by Clement for now [Chris Jack, 22 October], Plumley insists the power dynamic north of the border will ensure that any deal to bring McInnes to Glasgow would be relatively simple to complete.
“I think ultimately it would be, yeah,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.
“With the power dynamic in Scottish football, these kinds of examples are pretty plain to see. Of course, he has got to want to go, that’s the personal decision within it.
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox amid Derek McInnes speculation?
“But in terms of financial muscle, there would be a compensation package or a release clause fee that you need to pay for a manager, which is often the case nowadays as well.
“Rangers could certainly afford to do that if that is the person that they want.”
McInnes isn’t the only manager to be linked with the Rangers job before Clement has even been sacked, with Kevin Muscat’s name also mentioned after he came close to securing the role just over 12 months ago.
Ultimately, it will always cost the Light Blues some money to make a change in the dugout. Clement will need his new deal paid off and a new manager will have to be paid, regardless of whether or not a compensation fee is required.
It is now down to Clement to show that he is capable of turning things around in Glasgow. Patience is a rare commodity at either of the Old Firm clubs and it won’t be any different for the 50-year-old.
