Finance Expert: Tottenham could be in line for £35.8m windfall after Ange trophy promise

Tottenham will be in line for a £35.8million windfall if they manage to win the Europa League this season, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Spurs’ European campaign gets underway on Thursday (26 September) when they face Qarabag FK in the new-look group stage as they look to extend their winning run to three matches in all competitions.

Ange Postecoglou has promised fans he always wins silverware in his second season in charge of a club [Sky Sports, 15 September] and should he deliver on that promise in Europe, Plumley insists Spurs could be in for a major payday.

“There are some assumptions here,” Plumley excellently told Tottenham News.

“Assuming you win the league phase and take the majority of the ranking and bonus prize money that you could get from winning fixtures, the total amount possible for going all the way in the Europa League this season is around £35.8million [€43million].

“Of course, that is nowhere near the level of the Champions League, but that is a significant amount of prize money.

“There’s a big opportunity for Spurs to target that trophy with no relegation down from the Champions League this season.

“They’re likely to be one of the favourites and if they go all the way, you’re looking at around £33.3million [€40million] of prize money as well.”

Can Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou win the Europa League in North London?

While it won’t be easy for Spurs to win the Europa League this term, Postecoglou’s side should be confident that they can mount a serious challenge for the title, particularly given the lack of relegation from the Champions League.

Tottenham are one of the biggest teams competing in the new format of the competition and although the likes of Manchester United, Ajax and Frankfurt will fancy their chances, Spurs can beat them all on their day.

£35.8million is nothing compared to the riches on offer in the Champions League, but the Lilywhites need to find a way to maintain their form domestically and fire all fronts in Europe.

Hopefully, Postecoglou will come good on his promise and bring some silverware to north London this season. Whether it be the Europa League or Carabao Cup, Spurs fans will just want to end their barren run.
