Cole Palmer has been the standout player for Chelsea for some time now but he couldn’t do anything to help the Blues past Manchester United.

A dismal game ended 1-1 as goals from Bruno Fernandes and Moises Caicedo ensured a share of the spoils at Old Trafford.

Both teams will feel they could have done more and for teams who have spent so much, the quality on display was poor.

Indeed, most fans and pundits would expect a player like Cole Palmer to light up such a dull affair.

But even Palmer couldn’t do much at Old Trafford today and both Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard felt the same way about Palmer at full-time.

Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes share honest verdicts on Cole Palmer’s performance at Manchester United

Former England duo Lampard and Scholes know a thing or two about playing in midfield in the big games and both felt today that unfortunately, Palmer was off it.

“Cole Palmer wasn’t quite as effective in the game as we have seen him recently,” Lampard said on Sky Sports.

Scholes, meanwhile, had already hinted at Palmer being quiet in the first half, commenting on Premier League Productions about the Chelsea man and United’s Bruno Fernandes.

“It is going to be tight. There has been some good bits of play from the two Chelsea midfield players, but Cole Palmer and Bruno Fernandes have struggled to get into the game. Those are the players you want on the ball in the important parts of the pitch.”

Chelsea’s players need to step up when Palmer is off it

Sometimes, a top player has an off day and that’s all this was for Cole Palmer at Trafford today.

Paul Scholes also criticised Marcus Rashford for wasting chances, while Gary Neville slammed Man United in general for what they produced.

That shows that it wasn’t just Palmer who was off his game today but ultimately, it also shows he needs help.

Chelsea’s players cannot become reliant on the England man and on the days he’s not firing, others have to step up.
