Gabriel Agbonlahor now shares a concern he has about Federico Chiesa at Liverpool

Liverpool made just one signing this summer in terms of outfield players – bringing Federico Chiesa to Anfield after a goalkeeping addition was made in Giorgi Mamardashvili.

In August, the Italy international was signed for just £10.9m from Juventus – who paid £54m to Fiorentina for his signature in October 2020 – mainly due to the fact he only had 11 months left on his contract.

Despite the lack of risk attached to Liverpool signing Federico Chiesa – given the incredibly small transfer fee – Gabriel Agbonlahor has now raised one concern about the man from Genoa…

Question marks raised over Federico Chiesa

The 37-year-old has now questioned where the Italian will fit into the starting XI under Arne Slot.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “I am just looking at the team and thinking where does Chiesa get in? It’s going to take a lot, or an injury, for Chiesa to get into the side because Liverpool are flying. Diaz looks like the real deal on that left-hand side.”

The 26-year-old has commonly played on the left flank in recent years, making 61 appearances in that area throughout his career, although as Agbonlahor states, Diaz is shining at the moment and is highly unlikely to be dropped by Slot.

Chiesa has, however, also made 93 appearances on the right wing, but faces the seemingly impossible task of dislodging Mohamed Salah from that position.

There would appear to be a place in the centre of Slot’s attack up for grabs, as Darwin Nunez is currently out of favour, with Diogo Jota the preferred option right now, although the £10.9m man has made 88 appearances in the middle.

In truth, the fact Chiesa can operate anywhere across the frontline is probably why Liverpool signed him – he is the ideal option for attacking depth, given his price tag and immense versatility.

Liverpool No.14 does not need a cemented spot

We feel Agbonlahor is looking at the situation far too simply.

As Liverpool fans have seen in the likes of Takumi Minamino, Harvey Elliott and Caoimhin Kelleher in recent times, football is a squad game, and everyone has a role to play if silverware is to be won.

Liverpool would have been nowhere near a position to genuinely challenge for the quadruple in the 2022/23 season had Jurgen Klopp only focused on building a strong eleven, so Chiesa is sure to receive plenty of opportunities throughout what looks set to be a gruelling 2024/25 campaign, with added fixtures in the UEFA Champions League.

If the Italian grows frustrated at a possible lack of game time, he will simply have to prove to Slot in training that he is better than Diaz, Jota or Salah – which should breed healthy competition at Liverpool.
