Graeme Souness shares if he is close to Rangers return live on talkSPORT

Graeme Souness has admitted that he no longer has any interest in returning to Rangers in a backroom position at Ibrox.

The former Gers player and manager had confirmed in 2023 that he was in discussions with the Light Blues over a return to Glasgow, with reports at the time suggesting the deal was close to being confirmed [The Times, 26 October 2023].

Although Souness was involved in the appointment of Philippe Clement, no such deal was struck and when quizzed by Jim White, the talkSPORT pundit admitted “that ship has sailed”.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (12 August, 12:23) White asked: “Have you no longer got any interest in going back to Rangers?”

Souness replied: “This is not me touting for a job. That ship has sailed. No, that’s been and gone.”

It had seemed all but nailed on that Souness was going to make his return to Ibrox last year, but following the appointment of Clement, that talk appears to have fallen by the wayside quite quickly.

Whether or not the board in Glasgow don’t believe the pundit has much to offer at this moment in time remains unclear, but they appear to be quite content with the current setup with just a new CEO to be appointed.

Souness’ public admission that he thought Frank Lampard was a better fit than Clement [talkSPORT, 26 October 2023] likely won’t have helped his case as he quite obviously doesn’t see eye to eye with the people calling the shots at the club.

The current board at Ibrox are clearly lacking footballing knowledge and Souness would have provided that, but as the Gers look to close the gap to Celtic off and on the pitch they need the decision-makers to be aligned rather than conflicted.
