Harry Kane heads England into quarter-finals with dramatic comeback
Harry Kane's dream of winning Euro 2024 is still alive after England went within seconds of a shock exit to come back and beat a spirited Slovakia, featuring Hertha Berlin's Peter Pekarík.

Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane and his England team-mates sought to live up to their Euro 2024 favourites' tag by making a mark on the knockout stages, but they soon discovered Slovakia were in no mood to finish their brilliant run in Germany without a fight. Lukáš Haraslín and Dávid Hancko threatened in the opening stages, before Kane headed off-target in a rare threatening moment for the Three Lions. David Strelec then slipped the ball through for Ivan Schranz to turn past Jordan Pickford and send Slovakia into a shock lead. England looked to respond and stepped up their attacking efforts at the start of the second period, with Phil Foden having a goal disallowed for standing a fraction offside. England's Euro 2024 campaign was heading to a disappointing end against a steely Slovakia side featuring Hertha Berlin's 37-year-old right-back Peter Pekarík - until former Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham smashed in a stoppage-time leveller with a spectacular bicycle kick. The tie therefore went into extra-time, when Kane stepped up to slam a header into the net from short range and complete a stunning comeback. Pekarík turned a good chance to level the tie over the bar before England held on throughout a nervy second period of extra-time to set up a quarter-final encounter with Switzerland in Düsseldorf on Saturday 6 July.
