'I do know': Liverpool could try and sign £33m star if Trent Alexander-Arnold joins Real Madrid - journalist

Liverpool are yet to secure the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The defender has been immense for the Reds for many years now. He came through the club’s academy, became a star in the first team and played a big part in all the success they had under Jurgen Klopp.

Alexander-Arnold remains a key player for Liverpool, but the Englishman is yet to agree to a new contract at the club. His current deal expires at the end of this season.

There is a chance Alexander-Arnold could walk away for free next summer. That’s why Liverpool have formulated a plan for life after him.

Liverpool could sign Jeremie Frimpong if Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves

Jeremie Frimpong is among the most talented right-backs in Europe.

The 23-year-old played a big part in helping Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season. He scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions, which is a stunning record.

TBR Football exclusively revealed in October that Liverpool had scouted Frimpong, as had Real Madrid, who are on the market for a new right-back.

Now, Christian Falk has revealed that Frimpong, who was previously on Manchester City’s books for several years before he was sold to Celtic, is now on Liverpool’s shortlist.

The Reds could try to sign him in the summer of 2025 if Alexander-Arnold decides to leave them for Real Madrid or any other club.

Falk wrote in his column on The Daily Briefing: “Liverpool are looking at Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong – and it’s because of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“I read in MARCA that there should have been a meeting on Wednesday about his future; I can’t say if this is true. What I do know is that Liverpool have a shortlist of successors for Alexander-Arnold, as his current contract is set to expire in the summer.

“If he agrees a move to Real Madrid, they’re going to need a new top right-back. One of the fullbacks on the list is Frimpong. He’s playing very well at Leverkusen and was on the list at Manchester United back when Erik ten Hag was manager. Now United have Noussair Mazraoui, so this connection to United isn’t so close.

“Liverpool see that he’d be a really good option and it’s worth noting that Frimpong has a release clause in his contract worth about €40m [£33.3m/$42.1m], so they can just go ahead and buy him if they wish.”

The latest news on Real Madrid and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold isn’t new news to anyone.

The Galacticos have been keeping a close eye on the England star’s contract situation, and they are ready to pounce if he becomes available.

TBR Football exclusively revealed recently that Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid have spoken to Liverpool about Alexander-Arnold.

We can confirm that the Galacticos are actually open to signing the defender in January, even though he would be available for nothing six months later.

The prospect of selling Alexander-Arnold has been raised in internal discussions among Liverpool’s hierarchy, but at this moment in time, no decision has been made.
