Ibrox View: Clement drops transfer hint over Rangers star who had Ibrox exit 'On the cards'

Rangers and Philippe Clement are set for a busy final week of the summer transfer window with plenty of work to be done in and out of Ibrox.

While preparations will continue on the training pitch for the Old Firm clash at Parkhead against Celtic, the Gers boss will have one eye on the transfer market as he looks to make a couple of last-minute changes.

The Belgian himself has admitted it will be a busy week as he provided an update on the Gers’ transfer plans following the 6-0 thrashing of Ross County at Hampden Park on Saturday (25 August).

As quoted by Heart and Hand on X (25 August) he said: “I expect a busy week, but more incoming than outgoing.

“There will be outgoings but players who were not in the squad today.”

Clement’s insistence that the remaining outgoings will be made up of players not included in the squad for the win over County may well act as a hint over Kieran Dowell’s future beyond the 30 August deadline.

Reports earlier in the summer had suggested the Englishman had an Ibrox exit ‘on the cards’ after only one season having struggled with injury issues last term [Chris Jack, 28 May].

Most expected Dowell to return to England where he had previously starred for Norwich City, but such a move now seems incredibly unlikely to happen after he was introduced from the bench in Saturday’s 6-0 win.

The 26-year-old has come off of the bench in all three of Rangers’ opening Scottish Premiership games and was included in Clement’s starting XI for the League Cup win over St Johnstone at Hampden Park.

Although he isn’t clearly the first-choice number 10 or even in a deeper midfield role, he is one of Clement’s few options in that position now that both Ianis Hagi and Todd Cantwell are completely out of the picture.

Even if the Gers wanted to sell Dowell, they would first have to line up a replacement so they didn’t leave themselves short of options once the transfer window closes.

Of course, things can change incredibly quickly at this stage of the transfer window and should a big bid land for the Englishman’s services, the Light Blues could well decide to cash in and reinvest instead.

But at the moment, it seems as though Clement has all but confirmed that Dowell will still be a Rangers player by the time September rolls around.
