Philippe Clement has left Rangers in a potentially costly position after the boss addressed rumours regarding his future at Ibrox.
The Gers had hoped to avoid a multi-million-pound payoff to dismiss the Belgian as reports emerged he was a leading candidate for the vacant Belgium national team position.
However, Clement directly addressed the ongoing speculation, as relayed by Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [22 November], and again committed his long-term future to Rangers.
He said: “I was really clear that I said I engaged myself for the long-term to Rangers and I’m not going to change my mind on that.”
“So I think it’s very clear, I hope now in the future if something else comes, that you don’t go into discussion [about his future] anymore.”
The inevitable removal of Philippe Clement is set to cost Rangers
Rangers supporters are crying out for change, but unfortunately Clement holds all the cards for his future at Ibrox, with John Gilligan in no financial position to terminate the Belgian’s employment.
However, the Glaswegian outfit may see their hand forced; there is a growing expectation that if Clement’s side fall much further behind this year’s surprise package Aberdeen, the Gers will have no choice but to end his reign at Ibrox.
The long journey in bridging the nine-point gap between themselves and Aberdeen and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership will begin when Dundee United travel to Ibrox on Saturday [23 November] in the first in a long line of must-win occasions for the boss.
Clement could argue several factors that contributed to how the abysmal campaign has played out. From the ongoing chaos at board level to the lack of finances to fund the summer’s extensive squad overhaul, it has been a challenging ride for him in Scotland.
Regardless, Rangers can only perform on the pitch with the players that Clement selects. And unfortunately right now, not enough of the big names are stepping up to the plate.
The Light Blues will continue to trod on in a seemingly meaningless SPFL campaign and hopefully secure qualification to the knockout rounds of the Europa League. Still, the future looks grim until a new leader is instilled at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have sealed a record-breaking deal as the behind-the-scenes development is revealed.
