Ibrox View: Rangers star can silence Aiden McGeady after what he said about him

Vaclav Cerny can prove Aiden McGeady wrong by becoming less “predictable” and unlocking his true potential at Rangers.

Speaking on the BBC Scottish Football Podcast (4 November), McGeady highlighted Cerny as the Gers’ “shining light”, but said the Czechia international still makes himself far too easy to play against.

While Cerny has scored six goals in 16 appearances since arriving on loan from Wolfsburg, the 27-year-old’s spell at Ibrox has provided plenty of moments to show where he can improve.

“The first couple of games, I was really excited to see what he would bring to the team – as the games have gone on I think he’s become a bit more predictable,” he said.

“I’d like to see him play on the other side at times. When you understand that you can show him onto his left foot, he doesn’t want to go down the line.

“He’s the shining light of the Rangers team, but I don’t think that is anything to shout about at the minute, with the performances on the pitch.”

Vaclav Cerny needs to be given the tools to thrive for Rangers

By the numbers, Cerny’s start to life at Ibrox has been successful, with a goal almost every other start and becoming Philippe Clement’s go-to pick on the right-hand side.

McGeady’s suggestion of a switch to the left flank could prove to be beneficial given the Gers’ lack of options in this area, with Nedim Bajrami – a natural number 10 – routinely playing in the position.

Swapping the left-footed Cerny to the left and Bajrami vice-versa would certainly go some way towards providing Cyriel Dessers with more ammunition, but it remains to be seen if he’d take advantage of this.

However, despite only being on loan, Cerny is undoubtedly one of Clement’s most dangerous players and the Belgian must play to his strengths, rather than looking to make up for Dessers’ deficiencies.

The Czech making the right flank his own while Clement balances the team around him would be the preferred choice of many fans, and if his scoring form continues, Cerny will soon stake his claim as a fan favourite.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement will be limited to three changes as his Light Blues side head to Olympiacos this week.
