Kenny McLean moving to Rangers is a deal that is said to be “in the post”, according to a surprised Jonny McFarlane.

The Rangers Review journalist told the outlet’s Morning Briefing on 1 July that a transfer for the Norwich captain was well under way based on everything he had been told and the Scot is expected at Ibrox next term.

According to the Daily Record on 24 June the Light Blues are interested in signing the midfielder, who is a Gers fan, contingent on them hanging him a long-term deal.

McFarlane admits the 32-year-old would be excellent in this Rangers side but given his age, potential price tag, importance to the Canaries, and lack of resale value he did not expect things to be moving so quickly.

McFarlane said (18m 30s): “All the soundings I’m hearing are that this is a deal that’s in the post, that things are moving along nicely, that Kenny McLean is someone we’ll expect to see at Ibrox.

“I’m quite surprised at that because he’s the captain of Norwich, he was the player of the year last year, I’ve got a couple pals who are big Norwich supporters, they rave about him.

“You know his numbers in the Championship have been doing the rounds, he was a monster in that league in terms of winning balls for them.”

Philippe Clement looks set to add veteran to Rangers midfield next to Connor Barron

On the face of it a deal to sign a veteran international who has two years left on his contract and remains a key man for his current club doesn’t sound like one that Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen could have high hopes for this summer.

So if McLean is to get the chance to join the club he has previously admitted it would be “special” to play for [The Athletic] then it suggests the Ibrox hierarchy have decided to push the boat out or their opposite numbers at Carrow Road are being unexpectedly accommodating.

There is a relationship between the two clubs after the deals to sign Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell in the past two transfer windows respectively, but it would still be a turn-up for Norwich to sanction the exit of their skipper for anything less than a big fee after a campaign where he made 52 appearances.

With 21-year-old Connor Barron already snapped up after leaving Aberdeen, with a potential tribunal on the cards if a compensation fee can’t be agreed, there would be a lot to like about the Light Blues replacing Ryan Jack and John Lundstram with a current full Scottish international and a likely future one.

In other Rangers news, a “shocking” issue at the club could now turn out to be even worse than originally feared.
