John Wenham has backed Radu Drăgușin to start in place of Cristian Romero against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (15 September).

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims Drăgușin would be better suited to dealing with Arsenal’s set-piece threat.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will be looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park (1 September) in the first North London derby of the season.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes a defensive tweak could help the Australian and his players do just that.

“There is an interesting decision to be made in defence,” Wenham said.

“Tottenham have conceded three goals this season. It could be argued that all three of those goals were due to an issue with Romero defensively.

“Drăgușin is arguably the best in the air in terms of Spurs’ three centre-backs. Arsenal are very good from corners, and that is an area where we could be in big trouble.

“Therefore, I wouldn’t be against Drăgușin coming in for Romero this weekend. However, that depends on if Micky van de Ven is available to start.”

There are a lot more questions than answers heading into the clash between Tottenham and Arsenal.

Whether or not Postecoglou would even consider dropping Romero depends on the availability of 23-year-old van de Ven.

As for Arsenal, they will already be without Declan Rice and could also be without Martin Ødegaard after the midfielder was injured playing for Norway. As a result, Spurs fans might be feeling quietly confident.

However, supporters will likely have to wait a few more days to have a better idea of which players will be lining up for both sides.
