John Wenham claims Tottenham would demand a world-record fee for a defender to sell Cristian Romero.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose doesn’t think the North London side should even consider selling the 26-year-old.
As exclusively revealed by Tottenham News (23 June), PSG are one of several clubs interested in Romero.
But Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Ange Postecoglou and the club should be looking to build the team around the centre-back.
“Romero is contracted with Tottenham until 2027,” Wenham said.
“As a result, I think the club would be completely within their rights to demand a world record fee for a defender.
“We should be looking to build the team around Romero. I think that process started last season when he was named vice-captain.
“Maybe we shouldn’t be putting a price on him, but if we were, it would be a ridiculous fee.”
Would Ange Postecoglou allow Cristian Romero to leave Tottenham?
Postecoglou would no doubt be fuming if Daniel Levy were to sanction the sale of Romero.
The Argentinian is arguably one of the club’s most important players and proved last season just how vital he will be to any Spurs success in the coming years.
Unless promises were made that the money would be directly reinvested into the team, it is hard to see Postecoglou accepting the sale of Romero.
The World Cup winner and Micky van de Ven built an impressive partnership in their first season playing together, and Postecoglou will be keen to develop that relationship next season.
As a result, Romero should be considered one of the players off-limits.
