Keith Wyness taken aback by Man United's new Jarrad Branthwaite bid

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has hit out at Man United for their “laughable” latest Jarrad Branthwaite bid of £45million plus £5million in add-ons.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed only deal worth an initial £75million, with add-ons taking the total value to £100million, will see the centre-back move to Old Trafford.

It has been widely reported that Man United have seen a bid worth a potential £50million for Branthwaite rejected by Everton in recent days.

Football Insider revealed last month (17 June) that United were expected to return with a new bid after seeing their initial £35million plus add-ons offer rebuffed.

Sources have told Football Insider (8 July) that Branthwaite has agreed terms on a £160,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford, but he remains under contract at Everton until June 2027.

The centre-back boosted his reputation with a stellar campaign at Goodison Park last term and has recently made his England debut.

Wyness claimed Man United have “destroyed their integrity” with their “lowball” bids for the defender.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I just laughed again when that second bid came in – it’s nowhere near a valuation of a player of that quality.

“He’s a generational talent. I’m not being an Everton fan here, it’s just nowhere near enough.

“It’s a ridiculous way to conduct their transfer dealings.

“When I was in the Premier League, all the chief executives knew each other – and you get to know how each other move on transfers.

“Coming in with such a lowball offer just destroys your integrity.

“Of course there is a margin for negotiation, but you’ve got to be in the ballpark to be taken seriously.

“Dan Ashworth is in now, we’ll have to see if he can bring some sense to negotiations.

“£45m with £5m in add-ons, that’s still laughable.

“I’ve always said it’s going to be a £75m base fee, with add-ons. I’ve said months ago that he was a £100m player.

“He’s the right age, with the right talent. He performed spectacularly last season.

“He’s shown his athleticism and he’s also a very bright, stable and grounded kid.

“Branthwaite is everything you want in a centre-back.”
