Keith Wyness: Celtic 'dominance over Rangers is assured' after new London development

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Celtic’s rocketing share price is proof “dominance is assured” over rivals Rangers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the price reflects “very good” financial results expected to emerge from Parkhead for the 2023-24 campaign.

In the last week, Celtic’s stock price reached 192p on the London Stock Exchange for the first time since Martin O’Neill was in charge in November 2000.

The Hoops won the Scottish Premiership last season and will enter the league phase of the new-look Champions League – which is expected to earn them at least £30million.

In their financial results for the 2022-23 campaign, Celtic recorded a record-breaking annual profit of £40.7million.

However, Wyness insisted fans want to see “money on the pitch, rather than in the bank”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We’d have to go back to the Martin O’Neill days when it was that high.

“It’s certainly a big number and a nice graph to look at for the Celtic shareholders.

“It reflects the fact that there are expected to be some very good results coming out of this financial year.

“However, fans don’t want to see that. They want money on the pitch, rather than in the bank.

“Nevertheless, it shows the stability at Celtic. They’ve won the league, gone forward, they’re in Europe – there’s a lot to like.

“It’s also a nod towards the problems at Rangers. Celtic’s dominance looks assured for next season unless there is a dramatic change at Ibrox, and that is priced in.

“All those factors have combined. I’m not a big fan of clubs on the stock market, because I don’t think the reporting is the right thing for a football club.

“But from a Celtic point of view, it’s all good for the shareholders.”
