Lee Sharpe believes it would be “unbelievable” for Leeds United to be able to take Archie Gray on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 season.
The youngster only just joined Spurs in the summer transfer window from Leeds for a fee worth around £30million (BBC Sport) but rumours linking him with a London Stadium exit have already been shared (GiveMeSport, 31 October).
Speaking to BestBettingSites.com (1 November), Sharpe shared his thoughts on what Gray’s return to Elland Road would mean for both the Lilywhites and the West Yorkshire outfit.
“I think it would be unbelievable if Leeds could take Archie on loan in the second half of the season,” he said.
“It would be one of those deals that suits everyone. Archie would be playing regular football at a very high standard in an environment that he has flourished in before, he would get better and would go back to Tottenham a better player.
“It would be great for Leeds because he’s such a quality, versatile player. It’s a loan that would benefit all parties.”
Tottenham should let Archie Gray leave on loan
While Gray’s arrival was undoubtedly exciting for all those involved at Spurs, due to the form their midfielders have found themselves in, the youngster hasn’t been afforded much of a chance to prove his worth to Ange Postecoglou.
While he has been used as a right-back on occasion much like in Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash against Manchester City on Wednesday (30 October) it’s evident that the 18-year-old flourishes in a more central role where he can make forward runs and pick out key passes.
However, for Tottenham, it doesn’t feel like the midfielder is going to be afforded the chance to prove his worth in the centre of the park at the moment.
Hence, why, it makes sense that the 18-year-old is sent out on loan, perhaps even back to West Yorkshire.
Gray clearly has a bright future ahead of him but unless he gets some significant game time under his belt, his development could stagnate which wouldn’t be good for either party.
Only time will tell what Tottenham choose to do but, on paper, loaning the youngster to a team in England or perhaps even further afield seems to be the best option.
