Liverpool Exclusive: 'Huge' Trent update today

Liverpool have held talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold about signing a new contract and progress has been made over a deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that there is confidence on both sides that an agreement will be reached within the next few months.

Alexander-Arnold, 25, is in line for a “huge” pay rise and a deal that reflects his status as one of the outstanding players in the Premier League.

The defender has entered the final year of his current contract at Anfield and has attracted interest from Real Madrid, who had been tipped to sign him on a free transfer next year.

Sources say Arne Slot is “desperate” not to see Alexander-Arnold leave the club for free, and see him as the future captain when Virgil van Dijk departs.

This comes after Football Insider first revealed on 21 July that the club were expected to sit down with the right-back to trash out a deal before the end of the year.

Alexander-Arnold is a product of the Liverpool academy and first joined the club in 2004 at just six years old, before making his senior debut at age 18.

He has gone on to make 310 appearances for the club, winning a Premier League title, a Champions League trophy, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the Club World Cup.

Talks have officially begun between the two parties to secure his long-term future at Anfield as he remains a vital part of their plans.

Sources say he is in no rush to leave Anfield, but interest from Real Madrid and other elite European sides had emerged with a view to completing a deal next summer.

His close relationship with England teammate Jude Bellingham is expected to play a part in his decision, with the 15-time Champions League winners targeting their next “Galactico” signing.

After Jurgen Klopp’s exit and the arrival of Slot, multiple big-name Liverpool stars had been considering their long-term futures at the club.

Both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have also been linked with moves away, and both players also have one year remaining on their deals.

In other news, Salah could look to quit Liverpool this month.
