'Looking to leave' - Pundit View: Tottenham player on verge of exit after transfer news

Paul Robinson believes the signing of Archie Gray will open the door for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s Tottenham exit this summer.

The club have signed the Leeds prospect in a £30million deal, which has seen defender Joe Rodon travel the opposite way on a permanent deal to Elland Road [BBC Sport].

While Gray is just 18 years of age, he has shown an incredible amount of maturity, and with Hojbjerg linked with a move away this summer, now could be the time for him to find a transfer.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I think he’s been signed predominantly as a centre-midfielder – that’s how Tottenham will see him. We saw how well he played at right-back in the second half of last season so it gives Spurs that option if it’s needed.

“We look at Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie, they’re the first choice. But they will look to strengthen in those positions this summer. With Archie Gray there, he has an option of playing there but it’s not his preferred position and it’s not where Tottenham see him.

“The club will have had a discussion over where he prefers to play – he wouldn’t have made such a big move otherwise. He sees himself as a central midfielder, which I think will open the door for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s exit. He’ll be looking to leave – he said it himself.

“The signing of Archie Gray gives him the ability to do that.”

Despite making 36 Premier League appearances last season for Spurs, just eight of those were starts, becoming a backup player for Postecoglou.

Borussia Dortmund are the latest club to be linked with the Danish midfielder, as per Florian Plettenberg, who made it to the Euro 2024 Round of 16 with his country before losing 2-0 to Germany.

The 28-year-old has been a staple in the Denmark squad, impressing on the international stage, though Tottenham will likely only be hoping this boosts his transfer fee this summer.
