A summer transfer to Birmingham City would “tick so many boxes” for Rangers defender Connor Goldson, according to Roger Hannah.

The English defender has been linked with a move away from Ibrox during the transfer window, with reports suggesting billionaire-owned Birmingham City are now eager to bring him south of the border [Scottish Sun, 30 June].

Although the drop to League One would typically be viewed as a step down from the Premiership, Scottish Sun’s head of sport Hannah thinks this would be a transfer that would suit all parties involved in the deal.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday (1 July) he said: “I think there is an inevitable question over Connor Goldson. For the first time in his six years at Rangers, he lost that first-choice status last season.

“He was left out of the team by Philippe Clement and suffered an injury in training which brought a premature end to his season. You just wonder at 31 years of age if there’s going to be a way back for him at Rangers.

“You look at Birmingham, it ticks so many boxes. He’s from that neck of the woods, I think he’s a Wolverhampton lad, he’s in his 30s, Chris Davies knows him having come up against him up here and it just looks like a move that makes sense for everybody.”

Will Rangers sell Connor Goldson amid Birmingham City summer transfer interest?

As Hannah explains, there are several reasons Goldson may well be keen to leave Rangers for Birmingham City this summer and on paper the move seems like one which would suit all parties involved.

However, the Light Blues will need to replace the Englishman if they allow him to leave this summer and to do that they will have to pocket a reasonable fee for his services. Birmingham have the money, but it depends if they’re willing to pay it.

For Goldson, the opportunity to move closer to home and slightly out of the spotlight may well appeal. He had a difficult individual campaign last season which saw him slammed by pundits and supporters alike regularly.

But he may also believe that he should be playing at a higher level than League One. This feels like a deal that could happen if the right fee is put on the table, but there is still plenty of work to do be done yet.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been told the Light Blues’ next transfer priority following the signing of Liam Kelly
