Man United are set to go up against competition from Tottenham to bring Angel Gomes back to the club, a report from The Sun has claimed.
The midfielder left the Red Devils on a free transfer back in the summer of 2020, but the club are said to be targeting a reunion with the 24-year-old on a free transfer from Lille.
Although Spurs are also said to be keen, there is apparently a hope that he can be lured back to Old Trafford. New manager Ruben Amorim is also open to the deal as a long time admirer of the player.
It is suggested that the England international has been identified as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro in the centre of the Man United midfield.
Gomes is out of contract in Ligue 1 at the end of this season, with the French club apparently resigned to losing him.
That situation means clubs in England can agree a pre-contract deal with the midfielder in January, that would see him join them on free in the summer.
Man United must look to beat Tottenham to Angel Gomes deal
Football Insider Opinion
It does seem as though it would be a smart move for the Red Devils if they can bring their former prospect back to the club.
Both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen will be well into their thirties come the end of this season and the Dane is expected to leave, so they will need some younger, long-term options in the centre of the park at Old Trafford.
Gomes can certainly offer them that and the chance to return to Man United could be one that appeals to him too.
With that in mind it would prove frustrating for the club if they lost out on him, especially to a direct rival such as Tottenham.
It is also worth noting that it looks as though the Red Devils will be working on a smaller budget in the transfer for the time being.
Signing a player such as Gomes on a free could therefore be helpful when it comes to stretching their finances for other potential deals as well.
As a result, it seems a deal to bring the 24-year-old back to Old Trafford would be a sensible one for Man United to complete all round.
In other news, one pundit has made a claim over Ruben Amorim’s stance on Marcus Rashford’s Man United future.
