West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui and winger Mohammed Kudus may have ‘said a few things they regret’ in the dressing room after the Brentford draw a week ago (September 28)

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvenne understands the 24-year-old’s frustration at being brought off and believes he’s the kind of player who can produce the ‘one piece of magic’ needed to win games.

Kudus was replaced by PSG loanee Carlos Soler at half-time in their Premier League draw with Brentford after being dispossessed four times and creating just a single chance.

It’s been a tricky start to life at West Ham for Lopetegui but Tomas Soucek’s 54th-minute equaliser justified the Spaniard’s decision to freshen things up.

Mohammed Kudus can still be a key man for West Ham and Julen Lopetegui

The Ghana international is yet to reach the heights he had under David Moyes last season, with his only goal involvement so far this season coming in the form of an assist in West Ham’s 1-0 League Cup win over Bournemouth.

With only one Premier League win under their belt so far, West Ham will be hoping to break their duck in their game against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday (October 5).

“I’ve heard different stories about it so I don’t know how to comment on what’s true and what’s not”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Players are not happy when they come off, and I think Kudus is probably saying ‘I’m not the worst on the pitch’ because other players could have come off.

“Somebody like Kudus could change the game with one thing, he’s that good.

“You can look at people and say he wasn’t in the game but then they do one piece of magic and they win the game, Kudus is that kind of player.

“Other players are not going to win the game for you, these boys can win the game for you, that’s why I was disappointed he got taken off.

“He’ll be disappointed, a few things might have been said in that dressing room they might regret, only time will tell.
