'No Issues Expected' - Journalist shares when Friedkin's Everton takeover will be ratified by PL

Dan Friedkin’s Everton takeover will take between eight and 12 weeks to gain Premier League approval, according to Ben Jacobs.

The talkSPORT journalist reported via X on 23 September that there aren’t expected to be any issues with the process to ratify the American becoming the new Toffees owner.

Roma owner Friedkin has agreed a deal to buy Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent shareholding on Merseyside, swooping in to beat John Textor after unhappiness at the club over the latter’s public pronouncements about a takeover [Liverpool Echo, 23 September].

Friedkin is already on the European Club Association board while BBC journalist Guilia Bould reported after the agreement was announced that the finances are all in place and, crucially, the 777 Partners loan issue has been resolved.

It is a measure of how much more suitable for Everton ownership The Friedkin Group is than predecessors 777 that there aren’t supposed to be any problems getting the green light from the league.

Josh Wander and company got this far a year ago and never progressed any further as they were never able to prove their ability to fund the operation.

Textor faced his own huge hurdle with the Premier League since he remains a 45 per cent owner at Crystal Palace and would not have got approval to takeover the Toffees without detaching himself at Selhurst Park.

That appears to be a moot point now that Friedkin has dramatically returned to the frame and sealed a deal with Moshiri.

There doesn’t look to be an obvious barrier to the deal being completed now, although this being Everton there is also a chance.

It is unclear whether Textor getting close to a deal is what sparked Friedkin into taking decisive action, or whether this had been the Roma owner’s plan all along when he backed out in July citing “unresolvable” issues [The Esk, 20 July].

Issues around the £200million 777 debt were at the heart of the concerns at that stage [The Athletic, 19 July] but clearly aren’t any longer, so it may be that the emotional roller coaster fans were sent on was all part of the strategy.
