'Notable Absentees' - Journo shares update as exit-linked duo left out of Rangers action

James Tavernier and Todd Cantwell were both “notable absentees” from the action as Rangers drew with Standard Liege due to minor injuries, Andy Devlin reports.

According to the Scottish Sun journalist’s update from the Gers preseason camp in the Netherlands on 12 July the two first-team have no minutes yet “just through injuries and niggles, and what not” after missing the goalless friendly on 10 July.

Philippe Clement changed the entire outfield line-up at half time of the match while also making three additional changes to leave Jack Butland the only man to get 90 minutes.

Both Cantwell and his captain Tavernier have been linked with exits this summer but their absences from the preseason match was apparently not related to transfer situations.

Tavernier has been heavily linked to an exit for months now amid interest from Steven Gerrard in the Saudi Pro League and personal terms may have even been agreed on a move already [Gallant Few, 19 June].

Cantwell’s future has never seemed especially secure since Clement took over from Michael Beale while the former Norwich man’s form also dipped in his second season at Ibrox.

The latter was involved in a bizarre situation which saw an agent, former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique, offer the English midfielder to a club but accidentally send the message to the wrong person [Scottish Sun, 3 July] to suggest he could be on the move this summer.

If either are going to go, as with the likes of Cyriel Dessers and others, then wrapping up sales as quickly as possible is needed to clear the way to make key signings.

Jack Butland was the only Rangers player to get 90 minutes in the preseason friendly.

There have been significant numbers of departures and new arrivals already this summer but with the new season getting under way in less than a month the opening day starting XI is currently at risk of looking pretty similar to how it finished last season in such disappointing fashion.

In other Rangers news, a transfer has been confirmed after a club was priced out of the race to sign another exit-bound Ibrox man.
