Premier League club now wants Everton striker amid talks over Goodison exit - report

Brentford want to re-sign Neal Maupay before the transfer deadline amid talks between Everton and Marseille, Foot Mercato.

According to the French outlet on 24 August the Bees are interested in bringing the Frenchman back for a third time, after he spent last season on loan in West London.

Marseille have made the 28-year-old their “priority” for the remainder of the transfer window after a loan offer was rejected at Goodison Park.

Maupay likes the idea of the Ligue 1 move [L’Equipe, 20 August] but Thomas Frank’s side will be a threat to their chances of signing him as they eye another return.

Neal Maupay has scored once for Everton after Brighton move

Maupay scored eight times for Brentford last season in a marked improvement on his single Toffees strike in the previous campaign.

His £15million arrival from Brighton two summers ago [BBC Sport] hasn’t been money well spent ever since, as he never looked suited to the one-striker system that Frank Lampard and then Sean Dyche have used.

According to Le 10 Sport (24 August) the Toffees want €8m [£6.8m], since he would have to sign a contract extension to be loaned out again as he has entered the final 12 months of his current deal [David Ornstein, 20 August].

Even that reduced fee would be a bonus for Everton at this stage and could open the door to another late signing before the window shuts, amid interest in the likes of Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier and Chelsea’s Armando Broja.

Brentford would surely have a greater capability of paying what the Toffees want, but whether they are as intent on a deal as Marseille are remains to be seen.

They brought him in a year ago when Ivan Toney was banned for breaching gambling rules, and the England international’s status may determine if they move for Maupay or not.

In other Everton news, the latest Toffees takeover collapse stopped a former Manchester United manager from being appointed at the club.
