Derek Ferguson is hopeful that new chief executive Patrick Stewart can attract investment in Rangers once he gets settled at Ibrox.
Rangers confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United CEO Stewart on 25 November and he is set to officially begin his role in a little under two weeks’ time.
There has been talk of possible investment from the Far East for a while now at the Gers, most recently raised by Alan Brazil on talkSPORT [30 October], with many believing it is the only chance of bridging the financial gap on Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, BBC Sport pundit Ferguson said: “The new chief executive will hopefully use the contacts he has to attract an investment.
“It’s clear where we are – let’s be upfront about it. Celtic are in a strong position both on and off the park and Rangers are lagging way behind.
“If we can get some sort of investment, whether from the Far East or wherever, we need that if we’re going to turn things around. It’s really important.”
Who is Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart?
Stewart held this exact title at Manchester United – one of the biggest, if not the biggest – clubs in the world, which bodes well for the Gers.
Indeed, he spent some 18 years in various positions at Old Trafford, so this can go down as a shrewd appointment by the Gers.
The fact he does not begin his new job until later this month is annoying, but it is short-term pain for long-term gain.
As John Gilligan mentioned at the time of his appointment, Stewart arrives with plenty of pedigree. Let’s hope that extends to contacts in the world of finance.
Far East investment would very much be welcomed at Ibrox right now – or from anywhere for that matter – and the appointment of Stewart can only be a positive in that refard.
In other Rangers news, a first-team player could be off in January amid a new transfer reveal.
