Rangers Women continue winning SWPL start with nine-goal victory

Rangers Women made it three wins and three clean sheets in a row with a 9-0 win over Queen’s Park in the Scottish Women’s Premier League on 21 August.

Seven different scorers netted for the Gers as they stormed to the top of the SWPL table at Broadwood Stadium, being 5-0 up at half-time and keeping a third consecutive clean sheet in the process.

Kirsty Howat (two), Chelsea Cornet, Brogan Hay, Rio Hardy, Kathy Hill, Laura Berry and SWPL top scorer Katie Wilkinson were all on the scoresheet [Club Website, 21 August], as the Gers made it 24 goals in just three matches so far.

An own goal rounded off the scoring for the Light Blues, who overtook Hearts at the summit and now have a goal difference of +24, suggesting they are the team to beat this season.

Rangers become early pace-setters with Queen’s Park victory

Scoring 24 goals without reply in three games of a new campaign is perhaps the best possible start any club has made to a league season – and certainly one the Gers men’s side would kill for this season.

Jo Potter’s team are not only spearheaded by the SWPL’s top scorer in Wilkinson – who already has eight goals to her name – they also have a number one in Jenna Fife who is yet to concede a goal.

That sets up the foundations of a strong campaign as Potter’s side look to re-gain the title they lost at the final hurdle last season, losing out to arch-rivals Celtic on goal difference.

Celtic overturning a four-point gap in the Championship Round and recording a goal difference of +108 to the Gers’ +95 suggests that this column of the final table looks set to be crucial once again.

With the Light Blues having already built a goal difference which is 10 better than Celtic’s +14, it’s clear that Potter is not willing to lose out on another league title in such agonising circumstances.

In the Rangers news, the Light Blues could be closing in on a new defender as the transfer window deadline looms large.
