John Wenham was delighted to see 17-year-old goalkeeper Sam Archer handed his Tottenham Under-21s debut.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes Archer will be battling for the Under-21s number one spot next season.
Archer made his debut at that level in a 2-1 defeat to Ebbsfleet United at the Nigel Eady County Ground on Tuesday (5 November), a defeat which saw Wayne Burnett’s side eliminated from the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
However, despite featuring for the losing team, Archer impressed with his “brave” performance between the sticks (via Spurs’ Official Website, 5 November).
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was delighted for the youngster.
“That was massive for Archer,” Wenham said.
“Really good for his confidence. He’s been the starting keeper for the Under-18s all season. He’s incredibly vocal, very loud, and always shouting instructions for the players in front of him.
“He’s obviously one who has impressed this season. Therefore, it looks as though he was rightly rewarded.
“Luca Gunter is currently injured while Josh Keeley is out on loan. Aaron Maguire is likely to be released this summer when his contract expires, so it looks as though they’re making room for Archer to battle for the number one spot with the Under-21s next season.
“As a result, I am very pleased, and I think getting him some experience now is the right idea.”
Ange Postecoglou to take notice of Sam Archer at Tottenham?
Spurs are currently well-stocked when it comes to talented young goalkeepers.
Therefore, the emergence of another will only excite Ange Postecoglou further. Any footballer making an impression at the age of 17 is impressive, considering how young that is.
However, for a goalkeeper, that is even more impressive, considering how much longer a shot-stopper’s career can last.
As a result, Postecoglou would be wise to keep an eye on Archer’s progress in North London, especially now has more opportunities look set to arise with Maguire expected to move on from Hotspur Way.
And if he continues to make an impression, who knows how far the youngster can go.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou’s January transfer priority has emerged.
