Simon Jordan believes the SPFL should look to fine Rangers if they fail to meet the requirements Celtic are meeting to allow away fans at Old Firm games.

Rangers announced on their official website on Wednesday (14 August) that no away fans will attend the upcoming Old Firm at Parkhead on 1 September while there’ll also be no Celtic fans at Ibrox in January.

Jim White spoke to a Celtic fan on talkSPORT on Thursday (15 August) who claimed that the Hoops are seeking the introduction of safety netting at Parkhead to protect fans in and around the area where away supporters are situation [Scottish Sun].

Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan believes that if Rangers are not willing to take the same steps Celtic are taking to ensure fans’ safety, the SPFL should look to hit them with big-money fines.

“If Rangers don’t meet their obligations, then the league should step in and sanction them,” said Jordan on talkSPORT on Thursday (15 August, 11:12am). “But that doesn’t mean Celtic go, ‘we’ve done our safety obligations, the ground can be certified but because you won’t do yours, we’re not going to do ours’.

“It should be the league’s situation to step in and say, ‘Rangers, you’re getting smacked, Celtic have met their requirements, they’ve taken your fans in’. But Celtic are sitting there doing what the clubs have done to one another previously, which is a stand-off of neither one of them wanting to meet in the middle. Just because Rangers don’t do what they should do and Celtic have, doesn’t mean that Celtic shouldn’t then take the fans in.

“Someone’s got to start the process and the league’s got to step in and say, ‘right, we’re going to give you a massive, great big fine, Rangers’. Rangers might then find themselves more motivated.”

Rangers and Celtic both need to face SPFL wrath

Let’s face it, the SPFL have lost control of both of the Old Firm teams and seem scared to do anything about them because their brand relies so heavily on them.

But the brand is being tarnished time after time due to idiotic, petulant spats between the two biggest teams in Scotland.

The longer the SPFL allows this to continue, the less likely they are going to be able to achieve good deals with Sky Sports or other broadcasters and the longer they will continue to be laughed at, disrespected and mocked by everyone in and out of Scotland.

The league need to get control and make clubs accountable for their actions.

If clubs are going to shut out away fans, the clubs who cannot guarantee their safety should be punished, whether that’s Rangers, Celtic, Hibernian or Bonnyrigg Rose.

In other Rangers news, the club have sacked a staff member just days after hiring him due to major outrage on social media.
