James McFadden praised Tom Lawrence after his early goal for Rangers against Dundee United went some way to answering his critics.

Lawrence opened the scoring just seven minutes into the Gers’ 1-0 victory at Tannadice, a match that was already seen as must-win fixture.

The former Scotland forward explained how Lawrence had answered a degree of the criticism he had received from supporters in recent months with the “lovely” finish.

McFadden, alongside commentator Ian Crocker live on Sky Sports [15 September], said: “They looked for a fast start and they’ve certainly got it. Cyriel Dessers starts [the move], but Lawrence still has a lot to do.

“He gets a slight bit of fortune with the ricochet, it’s a positive run to support Dessers, and then when he gets into the position [to score] – a lovely little dink into the back of the net.

“Lawrence is one of those players who has come in for a bit of stick, and he’s stepping up and putting the ball in the back of the net.”

Rangers faith in Tom Lawrence pays off

Rangers reaped the rewards of Philippe Clement’s decision to restore Lawrence to the starting XI after benching him for the Old Firm defeat by Celtic, as he wasted no time in finding the back of the net.

Something had to give from that meek performance a fortnight ago at Parkhead, with the Gers at risk of slipping even further behind without victory at Tannadice.

Clement’s side enjoyed a flying start to the match and put aside all the pressure which has built over the past two weeks, with Lawrence looking dangerous going forward.

After an injury-hit time at Ibrox since arriving from Derby County, 30-year-old Lawrence will now be seeking a key role in Clement’s plans.

With the club having dispensed with numerous experienced heads and largely replacing them with young future project players, Clement will have to rely on the likes of Lawrence for some seniority and discipline to help steady the ship.
