BBC pundit Marvin Bartley has cited Rangers versus Celtic in mocking Rory Jennings after his criticism of Ange Postecoglou’s attitude to football rivalries.

Bartley posted on X [15 September] to dismiss Jennings’ viewpoint that former Celtic boss Postecoglou does not understand the “tribalism” of football rivalries in the UK, claiming that his experiences of the Old Firm are enough to make him aware.

The former Parkhead boss takes charge of Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday.

Bartley said: “Only in football can it be seen as ’not getting it’ for expecting your players to prepare to the best of their ability and want to win EVERY GAME!

He sarcastically added: “Not just saving it for when you play your rivals. ‘Doesn’t get derbies’. TBF Celtic v Rangers isn’t a big derby! Nonsensical stuff.”

Rangers v Celtic offers complete derby insight

Bartley has to be agreed with here – any experience of the Old Firm, coupled with the North London derbies Postecoglou has already taken charge in, is going to make the majority football managers well aware of British football rivalry.

Jennings’ point delved into the realms of wanting to beat clubs “more” because they are rivals, when Postecoglou merely made the point that he wants to win every game.

Ask Philippe Clement that question and you will receive the same, professionally crafted answer. Tribalism is for the supporters; professionalism is for the players and management.

To suggest managers do not value or understand the culture of derbies in the UK because they want to win every match an equal amount is absurd, and this same point applies to Jennings’ other crack at Postecoglou.

This was that he was apparently wrong to dare to try and win a match against Manchester City last season, which could have helped neighbours Arsenal win the Premier League title.

Every manager thinks the same, and if they don’t, they’re simply not an effective manager. Postecoglou returns to Ibrox later this season with Spurs to take on Rangers in the Europa League’s league phase.

In other Rangers news, Michael Gannon makes a Donald Trump comparison to Clement.
