Graeme Souness has told Rangers that Philippe Clement “needs help” following his comments after the Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic at Parkhead.
The Gers’ boss’ winless run against the Light Blues’ Glasgow rivals was extended on Sunday (1 September) as the Belgian saw his side picked apart by Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops with ease.
Following the final whistle, Clement drew some criticism from pundits and supporters alike for remaining positive in his analysis of the game but talkSPORT pundit Souness believes he needs some more support.
Speaking on Up Front with Simon Jordan (5 September, 27:15) he said: “He needs help, that’s a real bitter pill for him to swallow losing yet again.
“I’ve been in football a long time, I know how quickly things can change. Celtic did nine in a row, for the Rangers supporters they’ll be thinking this is it with the negative thought.
“Some people will think we’re never going to come back, they came back and Rangers did nine in a row.”
Will Philippe Clement exit Rangers after Ibrox developments?
While Clement has been the target of a lot of pundits’ and supporters’ frustrations over the last couple of days, it would be naive for anyone to assume that the bulk of Rangers’ issues start and end with the manager.
Yes, some of his decisions both off and on the field have been questionable over the last 12 months or so, but he has ultimately done his best with the mess that he inherited from Michael Beale in Glasgow.
However, there simply have to be signs of improvement on the blue half of the city sooner rather than later because he has finally been given the backing to put his own stamp on the playing squad in the transfer window.
In an ideal world, there would have been more money to spend as incomings wouldn’t have needed to rely on players heading the other way. Unfortunately, that is the situation in which the Gers find themselves in.
Hopefully, Clement manages to find a way to turn things around while also getting the support that Souness is asking for.
