Sources have suggested Nils Koppen tried to sign Jefte during his time at PSV, according to the Rangers Review.

The outlet reported on its website on Tuesday (1 October) that the Gers chief was eager to bring the Brazilian to the Netherlands in the past having watched the defender during his youth career.

Philippe Clement’s side’s interest in Jefte emerged when Koppen arrived at Ibrox last season and while a deal wasn’t reached in the January transfer window, the Gers managed to secure the transfer in the summer for a fee in the region of £600,000.

How much did Rangers pay for Jefte transfer at Ibrox?

Few expected Jefte to take to Scottish football in the manner that he has done, but the signing of the Brazilian is proving to be an incredibly shrewd piece of business from Koppen and the Light Blues.

With Ridvan Yilmaz sidelined through injury, the left-back has needed to be relied upon week in and week out and so far he has delivered some exceptional performances that have caught the eye of players and pundits alike.

PSV may well now be regretting missing out on the Brazilian. Whether or not he would have been such a success in the Netherlands is unclear, but it is obvious that Koppen saw something in the defender that caught his eye.

Either way, PSV’s mistake has been Rangers’ gain. Hopefully, Jefte will be a Gers player for years to come yet, but it does feel as though other teams will be keeping a close eye on the left-back after his impressive start in Glasgow.

While Koppen and those around him at Ibrox have come in for some criticism over the last year or so, it does feel as though they have managed to hit the nail on the head with their business in and out of Ibrox this summer.

It is only a start, but the transfer business has been encouraging.
