Motherwell would want at least £6million to sell Lennon Miller amid links to a Rangers move, according to James McFadden.
The Sky Sports pundit reacted live on the broadcaster’s coverage of Celtic’s win at Ross County on 6 October after Kris Boyd questioned why the Light Blues have been more interested in spending money on overseas imports than proven Scottish Premiership performers, doubling ex-Ibrox striker’s suggested fee.
Rangers reportedly scouted Miller, 18, ahead of the season [Football Scotland, 10 July] but no movement towards a deal has materialised, prompting Derek Ferguson to question whether Celtic might have got their first in secret [Open Goal, 26 September].
Boyd asked: “I don’t know, what would Motherwell be looking for? £3million?”
“£3-£4million, yeah,” Aiden McGeady agreed.
But McFadden scoffed and replied: “Come on. Six, start at £6million.”
Kris Boyd baffled Rangers haven’t moved for Fir Park star
Miller looks to have already made another significant step up this season with four goals and three assists from midfield across 12 appearances in all competitions.
If he continues in that vein he will be well out of the Light Blues’ price-range before long and any interest in the summer will amount to a missed opportunity.
Ferguson previously told Ibrox News that signing the teenage sensation and loaning him back to Fir Park to continue his development under Stuart Kettlewell would have been a good move.
When looking at the likes of Bailey Rice, who arrived from Motherwell in 2022 and is two months younger than Miller, it isn’t hard to see why.
Rice has made three brief first-team appearances since joining Rangers while Miller has featured 50 times for Motherwell to date.
But Connor Barron signed on a free transfer after leaving Aberdeen in the summer and has been a regular starter from the off, making 13 appearances already.
He may be 22 already but his central role, which has largely been a success barring a major error in the 4-1 loss to Lyon on 3 October, suggests Miller might have slotted straight in if Rangers had pushed for a deal in the summer.
They came up with £3.4m for Nedim Bajrami on Deadline Day [Sky Sports, 30 August], and while the Albanian has quickly impressed that money might have been the last chance if the Light Blues wanted the Motherwell midfielder.
In other Rangers news, a former Gers player has shared his “unpopular opinion” that an impressive new Ibrox signing is no better than the flop he replaced.
