Liverpool are expected to keep pressing on with their bid to sign Martin Zubimendi this week.
The Reds have had a quiet transfer window so far but Zubimendi has emerged as a key target for new manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool spent a fortune on new midfielders last summer but there has been a consensus for some time now that a new number six might be needed.
Zubimendi, then, seems to be the man identified to come in and play that role, with the suggestion he is the perfect signing for Arne Slot’s new-look Reds side.
As yet, though, there has been no agreement struck and according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, a lot is resting on the player himself.
Liverpool speaking directly to Martin Zubimendi over transfer
Taking to X last night to provide an update on where Liverpool are with Zubimendi, Plettenberg has said talks are taking place between Liverpool and Zubimendi’s team, albeit there has been no club to club contacts just yet.
There is an apparent complication in the deal as Liverpool would need to pay the full £52m release-clause up front.
Furthermore, Real Sociedad are doing their best to try and convince Zubimendi to stay and sign a new contract.
Liverpool have to get this done
Liverpool have been good in the market in recent windows but with no new signing as yet for Slot, they need to show him they can still be a force.
In modern football, a top number six is often seen as critical to any team. The likes of Rodri and Declan Rice have proven this over the last few seasons.
Zubimendi is one of Spain’s up and coming midfielders and he is very much rated highly.
Liverpool, then, simply need to get this one over the line and give their new manager at least one new face to build around for the future.
