The Esk: Senior Everton figure has no future, no 'Authority' to influence Dyche sacking

Kevin Thelwell has no long-term future at Everton because his voice doesn’t carry enough weight to influence Farhad Moshiri, says The Esk.

The Toffees blogger said on Talking The Blues on 1 September that the club’s director of football is unlikely to have made any suggestions to the club’s owner around a managerial change from Sean Dyche.

He suggested the former Wolves man would see his own future at Goodison Park as more secure as long as the embattled manager is there, and even if he saw otherwise he doesn’t have the authority at Goodison to convince Moshiri.

He said (46m 20s): “Personally, I don’t think Thelwell has a future in this club because I don’t think he has the authority that’s required to make those types of judgments and to make those types of suggestions to Farhad Moshiri.

“I don’t think he would carry enough weight in the argument. He might be asked what his opinion is and how it changes his approach to what he’s doing as director of football but I don’t think for a second Moshiri would think he had enough weight to put forward a proposal that Moshiri himself would take on board.”

Bournemouth defeat leaves Everton figures under major pressure

Three losses in three to kick off the Premier League season has put everyone under immediate pressure, with the manner of the 3-2 reverse to Bournemouth particularly galling.

Dyche’s position is coming under increasing scrutiny as a result, but whether that is a realistic prospect is hard to determine with Moshiri still in charge.

Paul Joyce suggested in The Times on 15 August that both the manager and Thelwell would have been given contract extensions under normal circumstances but are currently set to see their deals expire at the end of the season.

A takeover could easily see a new owner wish to install their own set up but until that happens it is unknown whether Moshiri is interested in changes to either’s position.

John Textor remains in pole position but is deemed unserious by some close to the situation who expect Dan Friedkin to return [Paul Brown, 29 August].

Everton
Farhad Moshiri may not see Kevin Thelwell’s voice as carrying the weight to influence him at Everton.

As it pertains to the manager it is hard to see anyone other than David Moyes agreeing to come into the situation as it is [Richard Keys, 26 August], and it is debatable whether the former West Ham boss would be a massive change from Dyche.

Thewell can argue that he has secured a host of new signings this summer despite the financial restrictions, held onto Jarrad Branthwaite, and secured “financially favourable” terms out of Chelsea for Armando Broja [David Ornstein, 30 August].

But it is easy to forget that as director of football he is technically Dyche’s boss, when it feels inconceivable that it would be him rather than Moshiri that would instigate a change.

Both Thewell and Dyche have done some good work in difficult circumstances during their time at Goodison Park, but it doesn’t feel like it right now.

In other Everton news, the Toffees were offered a near-£40m defender as part of a three-man swap deal before the transfer deadline and turned it down.
