'This Is Bad' - Keith Wyness: Chelsea could now be hit with expensive legal action

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he “wouldn’t be surprised” to see a player take on Chelsea in the courtroom if they are frozen out at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted legal action against the so-called ‘bomb squad’ practice could block off that option for the Blues.

The Athletic reported last week (22 October) that centre-back Josh Acheampong, 18, will not play for any of Chelsea’s first team or development sides until he agrees a new deal.

Wyness told Football Insider (2 November) that Chelsea are closing in on a contract renewal for the young defender in this case.

However, the Blues also froze out a number of first-team players in the summer window to accelerate their moves away from Stamford Bridge.

It emerged in August that The Professional Footballers’ Association is considering taking action to prevent clubs from moving senior players away from the first team.

Chelsea stars could end ‘bomb squad mentality’ with legal action, says Wyness

When asked about the bomb squad mentality employed at Chelsea, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is bad, it’s just not the right way to motivate young staff.

“But at the same time, I’ve been there with young players who think they are the next greatest gift.

“They want to become multi-millionaires before they are even famous.

“You’ve got to take it with a pinch of salt and don’t get railroaded into negotiations.

“Nevertheless, young talent is at a premium – especially the quality which has come through at Chelsea.

“I don’t think there will be a shortage of clubs looking to take their players on.

“Acheampong’s situation should be resolved pretty soon, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone take the legal route pretty soon if Chelsea exclude them.

“That would block that line of negotiation for clubs.”
