Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou looks as though he could be in serious trouble in North London.
The odds have been slashed on Daniel Levy cutting ties with the Australian after Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the City Ground on Thursday [26 December].
It marked Spurs’ second league defeat in as many games, with ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett sharing an “appalling” verdict after the clash on Boxing Day.
As a result, the North London club remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table, sitting 11th after 18 league games, of which they have lost nine and won just seven.
There is no getting around it – that is an atrocious record for a club of Spurs’ size at this stage of the season, and if Postecoglou were to be sacked, the 59-year-old could have very few complaints.
However, Spurs have so often chopped and changed managers in recent years, and fans are unlikely to tolerate too much more of the managerial merry-go-round.
Therefore, if Levy is going to pull the trigger and replace Postecoglou, he needs to have a suitable replacement in mind, and Massimiliano Allegri could be just the right man, with fans calling for Levy to hire the former Napoli midfielder.
Daniel Levy to replace Ange Postecoglou with Massimiliano Allegri at Tottenham?
When Postecoglou arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there were a lot of question marks around him due to his lack of experience at the highest level of European football.
However, the same could not be said about Allegri.
While the 57-year-old has only managed in Italy, his record in his home country speaks for itself. As Juventus manager between 2014 and 2019, Allegri won five consecutive Serie A titles and four Coppa Italia titles in a row.
Overall, he has won the Italian League six times as a manager, and the Coppa Italia five times, while he also reached the UEFA Champions League final with the Old Lady in 2015 and 2017, demonstarting his credentials in Europe as well as Italy.
While some might not be so keen on Allegri’s defensive play style, after such a chaotic 18 months under Postecoglou, a bit of pragmatism might not go amiss as Spurs continue to search for an end to their agonising trophy drought, which will stretch to 17 years in February.
However, what will perhaps appeal most to Levy is that Allegri is currently without a club. As a result, appointing him might prove straightforward, and could perhaps be done within a matter of days.
Therefore, if Levy does decide to take a risk and sack Postecoglou mid-season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Allegri was one of the Spurs chairman’s first phone calls.
