'Unpleasant' - Tom English claims proof why Clement can't be happy about Rangers win at Dundee Utd

Philippe Clement will be relieved Rangers secured an “unpleasant” win at Dundee United but the performance means he can’t be encouraged, according to Tom English.

The BBC Scotland journalist reacted via X on 15 September after the Light Blues took three points at Tannadice in a tight victory decided by Tom Lawrence’s early strike.

He claimed the victory was anything but comfortable and pointed to Gers bookings for time-wasting late on as proof of why.

He wrote: “Rangers picking up bookings for time-wasting in defence of a 1-0 lead tells its own story. A small bit of solace for Jim Goodwin that his team gave the jittery visitors an unpleasant afternoon. Philippe Clement should be relieved but hardly encouraged”.

Unsurprisingly this low-confidence Gers side weren’t on fire against Jim Goodwin’s men but it was a win that should have been more comfortable.

The visitors came into the game behind their hosts in the Scottish Premiership after a miserable loss to Celtic prior to the international break, with promoted Dundee United the surprise package of the early weeks of the campaign.

A fast start ultimately proved the difference but even as the game became more scrappy Jack Butland’s goal was hardly under siege.

There were plenty of questions marks still with the likes of Kieran Dowell and Robin Propper suspect, and Nedim Bajrami’s debut after being introduced at half-time could hardly have been more underwhelming.

But Lawrence could have feasibly scored four if his finishing had been as composed as it was for the opener, and the likes of Connor Barron and Hamza Igamane were impressive.

This win doesn’t solve all the issues at Ibrox currently, just as the 6-0 win over Ross County didn’t make the Old Firm loss acceptable despite the manager’s claims.

But Clement and his side just needed a win without major incident as the first step towards recovery, and that is what they got.
