‘Very, very good’: Alan Shearer left in awe of ‘brilliant’ Arsenal player at Euro 2024 recently

Alan Shearer has now been sharing his praise for an Arsenal player he believes has been ‘very, very good’ for his country at the Euros. 

Mikel Arteta saw just one of his players eliminated at the quarter-final stage of Euro 2024, with Kai Havertz bowing out with Germany.

The tournament hosts were eliminated by Spain, who have enough talent in their squad to leave David Raya on the bench.

Otherwise, Arsenal now have just five of their original 11 representatives at the tournament, with just three of those expected to start.

William Saliba will be attempting to continue his imperious performances for France against Spain, hoping that the attackers ahead of him can step up their efforts to overcome La Roja.

And then there’s both Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, who have arguably become England’s two most important players.

Moreover, following Saka’s tournament-saving display against Switzerland on Saturday, Shearer has now been sharing his thoughts on the performance.

The pundit was speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast and was amazed by how the Arsenal winger dealt with double-markers.

Shearer said that Saka was giving Switzerland’s defenders a torrid time, and was a huge positive for Gareth Southgate.

He shared: “Without doubt Saka was a positive. I thought he was brilliant.

“The way he was going past defenders and getting to the by line and getting balls in, even when they were doubling up on him, I thought he was very, very good.”

Of course, it seems very likely that the Arsenal forward will again play as a right wing-back when England face the Netherlands on Wednesday.

England fans will hope that Luke Shaw is fit to start on the left, perhaps meaning Kieran Trippier will drop to the bench.

Against Switzerland, Saka was still able to get forward a considerable amount, justifying Southgate’s decision to add further defensive responsibility to his game, whilst keeping him on the right.

Of course, Rice’s role will be arguably even more important, who is delivering understated performances propping up the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, who has been incredibly exciting too.

All that being said, Rice did send a two-word message to a forward linked with Arsenal after Saturday’s win.
