'Always indicated': Journalist shares what Liverpool sources are saying about signing Anthony Gordon

Liverpool’s summer transfer activity has not really got going yet but reports of an interest in Anthony Gordon have got Reds fans thinking.

The Newcastle winger, who was formerly at Everton, is currently away with England at the Euros, albeit he has only played a handful of minutes.

Reports have claimed Gordon is on the radar of Liverpool as they seek to test the market for new wingers.

At the same time, Luis Diaz could also move on if a good offer comes in, hence the apparent interest in Gordon.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool signing Gordon is not an easy deal.

And he’s revealed what Anfield insiders have been saying all along about the Newcastle star.

What Liverpool insiders feel about signing Anthony Gordon

Speaking for GiveMeSport, Jacobs has revealed what those at Liverpool have been saying all along about signing Gordon.

“As soon as the Anderson and Minteh deals happened, the door was shut. Now Newcastle view Gordon as near untouchable. So, the only way the Liverpool move will happen is if they meet the £100million valuation,” Jacobs said.

“Liverpool sources had always indicated, long before the deadline, that as much as they liked the player, they were not prepared to do that. I think Gordon will come back from the Euros and have to put his head down and focus on Newcastle.

“I think we should say as well, as much as Liverpool is indeed a move that Gordon would relish, he’s not unhappy at Newcastle, either.”

For Newcastle, getting through June in good shape with PSR and keeping the likes of Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak was key.

They have now done that and as Jacobs says here, the pressure is off a touch now when it comes to cashing in.

For Liverpool, the idea of splashing £100m on Gordon may seem excessive.

But, if Diaz does go, then it might be one the Reds pull the trigger on as they look to back Arne Slot.
