Ange Postecoglou will need to think outside the box when Tottenham host Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.
Postecoglou has seen the odds of him being sacked slashed after the 1-0 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Thursday (26 December).
Therefore, he will be desperate to avoid a third consecutive league defeat when Wolves visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 29 December. However, after an injury update on Radu Drăgușin, the 59-year-old is unlikely to be feeling too optimistic.
Postecoglou told the press [via Football London, 27 December], “A bit early to tell. He [Drăgușin] injured his ankle last night and felt like he couldn’t continue. We’ll have to wait and see.”
And as if that wasn’t enough, Ben Davies also remains sidelined after suffering a setback in his return from injury, with Postecoglou saying, “No, he’s [Davies] ruled out.
“Unfortunately he had a setback in training and he’s probably out for another couple of weeks. So yeah, he’s gone.”
Therefore, it looks as though the Spurs boss could be without all four of his senior centre-backs against Wolves. As a result, he could be left with no choice but to hand a first Premier League start to Alfie Dorrington.
Alfie Dorrington to start for Tottenham against Wolves?
Dorrington has already made his Premier League debut, coming off the bench in the 5-0 Premier League win against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday 15 December.
Therefore, it is clear that Postecoglou trusts the 19-year-old to play in the Premier League.
And while starting a match is a very different story to coming onto the pitch when your team is 5-0 up, it looks as though the Australian doesn’t have much choice but to start the England youth international.
However, while that might be seen as a bit of a gamble, Mikey Moore has proven previously this season that a young player can come into the first-team and make an impact, while Archie Gray, who is a year younger than Dorrington, has also been featuring regularly for the first-team.
Therefore, while this availability crisis is a clear sign that Levy needs to get the chequebook out in January, with suggestions having been made that the Spurs chairman could wait till the summer to get better deals on certain players, Postecoglou will hope that Dorrington could at least do a job on Sunday.
In other Tottenham news, Massimiliano Allegri could be ready to turn the tide in North London as pressure on Postecoglou increases.
